Windows Firewall
A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that can help protect your computer against hacker attacks, such as computer viruses. A firewall helps to screen out many kinds of malicious Internet traffic before it can reach your computer.
Windows XP has a built in firewall. Follow these instructions to ensure this firewall is turned on.
Turn on Windows firewall
- Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections
- Under LAN or High Speed Internet, right click Local Area Connection and click Properties
- On the tab labeled Advanced, click on the button labeled Settings
- Make sure the box labeled On (recommended) is checked. Your firewall is now on.
