Windows Firewall

A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that can help protect your computer against hacker attacks, such as computer viruses. A firewall helps to screen out many kinds of malicious Internet traffic before it can reach your computer.

Windows XP has a built in firewall. Follow these instructions to ensure this firewall is turned on.

Turn on Windows firewall

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections

  2. Under LAN or High Speed Internet, right click Local Area Connection and click Properties

  3. On the tab labeled Advanced, click on the button labeled Settings

  4. Make sure the box labeled On (recommended) is checked. Your firewall is now on.
