Automatic on-access scanning

VirusScan will automatically detect and eliminate known viruses by monitoring disks, CD ROMs and files when these are used in a way that might introduce a known virus onto the PC or cause a virus to spread further (on-access scanning). The icon on the taskbar shows that on-access scanning is in place.

If a virus is detected VirusScan will automatically try to destroy it (if VirusScan is unable to clean a file, the file will be renamed to have a .VIR extension).

To check the version of VirusScan and the date its virus definitions (DAT files) were last updated:

  • Right-click the VirusScan icon
  • Choose About VirusScan Enterprise

To see stats about the activity of On-access Scan since the system was last restarted:

  • Right-click on the VirusScan icon
  • Choose On-access Scan Statistics

To see how the VirusScan On-access Scan is currently configured:

  • Right-click the VirusScan icon
  • Choose On-access Scan Properties.
    Note: altering the default VirusScan configuration may have severe security or performance implications.

Absence of a VirusScan warning does not guarantee that there is not a virus on a PC, removable media (eg floppy disk or CD ROM) or network drive because VirusScan only warns when these are used in such a way as may activate the virus. To scan an entire PC, disk, CD ROM, or network drive run VirusScan manually (on-demand scanning).

VirusScan on-demand scanning

VirusScan can also be run manually to check particular drives or folders. To do this:

  • From the Start menu select Programs and then Network Associates then VirusScan On-Demand Scan
  • Alternatively Right-Click on the VirusScan icon on the Toolbar and select On-demand Scan

The VirusScan main screen looks as follows:

To scan all local drives, including a floppy disk if inserted:

  • Set Where to All local drives
  • Click on Scan Now

To scan just a floppy disk:

  • Use the Edit button to set Where to drive A:
  • Click on Scan Now

To scan a single drive or folder:

  • Use the Edit button to set Where to the drive or folder you want to scan
  • Click on Scan Now

It is also possible to scan drives or folders from My Computer or Windows Explorer. To do this:

  • In My Computer or Explorer, right-click the drive or folder to scan
  • From the context menu, select Scan for viruses. The VirusScan main screen appears
  • From the VirusScan main screen, click on Scan Now

Scheduling on-demand scans

The Console can be used to run on-demand or scheduled scans to take place at specified times.

To create an On-demand Scan task:

  • Click on the button for Create New Scan Task (3rd icon from the left on the Toolbar)
  • To define the scan task, answer the questions that the Wizard asks
  • Save the task, giving it a suitable meaningful name

To run a saved scan task:

  • In the Console window, select the task to run
  • Click on the Start Task button (8th from the left on the Toolbar)

To schedule a saved scan task to run at a particular time:

  • In the Console window, select the task to schedule
  • Click on the Display Task Properties button (4th from the left on the Toolbar)
  • In the Properties window click Schedule button, check Enable scheduler and click on the Schedule tab, Schedule the scan to your requirements

To view the results of an on-demand scan task (eg that was run overnight):

  • In the Console window, select the task
  • From the Task menu, select Statistics (if more detail is required, select Activity Log)
