Proxy
About the proxy
The proxy server is a computer that sits between your computer and the Internet. It stores copies of web pages and Internet files that other computers have requested.
How the proxy works
When a student wants to view “www.google.com”, the proxy server gets the file from the Internet, sends a copy to the student, and stores a copy on the server. When another student requests “www.google.com”, the proxy server can hand them a stored copy of “www.google.com”, rather than downloading the file again. The result is that downloads of common Internet websites and files are much faster.
Proxy benefits
- Internet traffic traveling through the proxy recieves a higher prioritization than regular web browsing
- Common websites are already stored on the proxy server, so web surfing will be faster
- The proxy helps to reduce traffic on the network
Proxy security
The overall usage of the proxy server will be monitored, but the content accessed by individual users is not monitored. The proxy will not limit user’s access to any sites or files, and any information you enter on to a web page will not be stored on the proxy server.
