What is ResTek?

ResTek, a program of Western Washington University’s Office of University Residences, provides education and support to on-campus residents in their use of technology. The ResTek staff provide assistance in the form of phone and email communication, instructional web pages, and moderated discussion forums. ResTek focuses on internet connection issues, virus protection and detection, and responsible use of the computer network.

Phase One

The ResTek Internship begins with a training and work period. Interns move into their residence halls several days before the halls open on Sunday, September 20th, and train in preparation to provide technical support in their halls, with work scheduled around other school-related commitments.

  • Troubleshoot resident Ethernet connections to the Internet and wireless routers
  • Assist and educate residents in a one-on-one environment, by phone, email, or visiting the resident’s room
  • Work independently under limited supervision
  • Work in a group environment where everyone contributes their individual talents to accomplish the group’s goals
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned

Phase Two

Interns can then voluntarily stay connected to ResTek throughout the academic year, with opportunities to take on a range of commitments based on interest and availability. This stage might include the following:

  • Attending ResTek staff meetings
  • Continuing to troubleshoot resident Internet connections an as-needed basis in your residence hall
  • Representing ResTek at Hall Council meetings
  • Other projects as assigned

Term of Internship and Training

The internship will span the entire 2009-2010 academic year, with opportunities to be considered for ongoing, part-time, positions with ResTek if they become available. Training will begin several days before the residence halls open on Sunday, September 20th, and tech support shifts scheduled around school-related and other activities continue through Friday, September 25th. Phase Two of the internship proceeds through the end of Spring Quarter 2010.

Are there other jobs at ResTek?

That said, we are interested in hearing from students who might be interested in working at ResTek in any of the positions listed on our jobs page. We’d like to provide more information and guidance as to what kind of experience these positions require, as well as specifics about what interested students can do to learn the skills they would need in order to qualify.

So, if you are interested, please carefully read the job descriptions on the jobs page and submit an interest survey to let us know that you’d like to learn more.

We’ll hold on to your contact information and invite you to an informational meeting sometime during Fall quarter.
