169 IP
To fix a 169 IP, check these three areas of your connection. You should open a web browser after making each change in order to test your connection.
Ethernet Cards / Network Interface Cards (NICs)
- Check for link lights: Link lights are located near the ethernet port on the back of your computer. If your Ethernet card has a connection, the link light should be a solid color, usually green. If it does not, follow the Instructions for Installing a NIC to make sure the card is seated securely.
- Check which connection is enabled: If you have more than one way to connect to the internet, follow the Network Settings Instructions to make sure your Ethernet card is enabled and configured correctly.
Cables
- Check your Ethernet cable connection: Check that your cable is plugged in tightly to both the Ethernet port in the wall and to your computer.
- Try a different Ethernet cable: Ethernet cables may be bad, even if they are new. Ask to borrow your roommate’s Ethernet cable to connect your computer to your Ethernet port. If this fixes the problem, you need a new Ethernet cable.
Ethernet port
- Switch Ethernet ports: Plug the Ethernet cord in your computer to a different Ethernet port in your room. If you are able to get a connection, your Ethernet port may need a repair. Contact ResTek at x2946 and we will check you out a hub until the port can be serviced.
