Job description

The Web Application Developer is responsible for developing, modifying, and maintaining web-based projects for use on both the ResTek website and internal tools used by ResTek staff members. Duties are varied, moderately complex and involve a substantial degree of responsibility and judgment. The Web Application Developer works under limited supervision of the Assistant Director for Information Technology and receives direction and technical advising from the Web Systems Developer.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and update ResTek web-based applications as needed
  • Create user and developer documentation
  • Work with ResTek staff to maintain a functional residential network

Term of position and training

Openings available soon to begin training Fall 2008. ResTek will also be accepting applications on an ongoing basis in order to develop a pool of Web Application Developers who may be hired on an as-needed basis.

Hours up to 19 hours a week throughout the school year, but hours vary by project and demand. The typical work week is 10-19 hours a week. Hourly wage of $9.46 per hour for both work-study and non work-study students. The Web Applications Developer reports to the Assistant Director for Information Technology. The Web Systems Developer provides day to day technical advice and is the primary technical resource person Web Application Developer.

Required knowledge / experience

(Many skills and knowledge are gained through on-the-job training and experience.)

  • PHP/MySQL (or equivalent) experience
  • Web design experience (HTML, CSS)
  • Familiar with modern web design principles
  • Familiar with database concepts
  • Experience working in a UNIX-like environment
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Comfortable with computer technologies and willing to learn about new technologies
  • Attention to detail
  • Motivated individual with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A willingness and ability to work independently and in a team environment both efficiently and courteously
  • Ability to react to changing technologies
  • 2.00 cumulative grade point average
  • Must maintain a minimum of ten (10) credits per quarter for undergraduates (8 credits for graduates students) during the entire duration of employment
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming principles

Desired knowledge / experience

  • Basic knowledge of network protocols and troubleshooting
  • Basic knowledge of Python
  • Basic knowledge of DNS and DHCP configuration on linux platform
  • Experience with CVS revision control system or equivalent
  • Experience with network virus detection and prevention strategies
  • Knowledge of bandwidth management strategies
  • Knowledge of C/C++
