Job description
The ResTek staff provides instruction and assistance to residents in the form of room visits, phone and online support, instruction sheets and e-mail communication. ResTek focuses on connection issues, virus protection and detection, and responsible network use including bandwidth management and obeying copyright laws.
The Public Relations Representative pro actively coordinates communication from ResTek to residents, ensuring clarity and timeliness of information. This position helps residents to maintain healthy computers and healthy Internet habits. Typical communications include e-mails, sign, and in-person events such as Hall Council meetings and Summer/Fall Orientation programs. The PR Rep presents ResTek to the Western Washington University community.
Responsibilities
- Answer questions about ResTek for current residents by e-mail, phone, and in person
- Present ResTek to parents and students at Summer orientations and fall opening
- Anticipate and quickly deliver residents with important information to keep a healthy computer and Internet connection
- Write and maintain instruction sheets that are easily understood by a variety of computer users
- Write targeted messages via email, posters, and table tents
- Organize and maintain the relationship between ResTek and residences at Hall Council meetings
- Work closely with the ResTek Program Coordinator and Webmaster
- Collaborate with other staff members to create written materials
- Work on various projects throughout the quarter in a team environment
- Liaison to ATUS HelpDesk to assure accurate information dispersed to students
- Organizes and helps design/edit advertisements
Term of position and training
The Public Relations Representative position begins in Spring Quarter 2008 with paid training averaging 5-10 hours per week. Summer work is also available, with hours fluctuating from project to project. Typically, in the Summer, there can be weeks with no work as well as weeks with a maximum of 35 hours of work available. This position then continues through the 2008-2009 academic year and beyond.
Salary and reportage
Current salary is $8.50 per hour for both work-study and non-work-study. This position reports to the Program Coordinator for ResTek.
Qualifications
- A highly motivated individual, with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment both efficiently and courteously
- Ability to translate technical information into non-technical (laymence) terms
- Ability to communicate affectively with other staff members
- Familiar with AP style of writing
- Comfortable with Microsoft Word, e-mail, and web browsing
- Comfortable with Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign, or another graphic design program
- Willingness to learn HTML
- Experience with or interest in learning about audio and video editing
- Willing to to learn about ResTek and technology
- Must maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average
- Current on-campus residency desired, on-campus residency experience required
- Must maintain a minimum of ten credits per quarter for undergraduates, and eight credits for graduates during entire duration of employment
