Job description
The ResTek staff provides instruction and assistance to residents in the form of room visits, phone and online support, instruction sheets and e-mail communication. ResTek focuses on network/Internet connection issues, virus protection and detection, and responsible network use including bandwidth management. Consultants work a flexible schedule, with an emphasis on educating students about their technology so they may solve future problems.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot resident Ethernet connections to the Internet and wireless routers
- Assist and educate residents in a one-on-one environment, by phone, email, or visiting the resident’s room
- Work independently under limited supervision
- Work in a group environment where everyone contributes their individual talents to accomplish the group’s goal. For example, you may have more experience with Macintosh computers, while another staff member has more experience with Windows. In this way, you can help each other with residents’ different needs.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and training
- Other tasks and projects
Term of position and training
Positions will vary in length from one month to the full fall quarter to a year-long commitment. Staffing levels are established based on the need through the academic year. Paid training is provided during Spring Quarter and throughout the duration of employment.
Salary and reportage
Salary as of Fall 2008 is $8.76 per hour for both work study and non-work study students. Consultants report to the Program Coordinator for ResTek and Western Card. Hours vary between 10-19 per week.
Qualifications
ResTek is interested in applicants that are willing to learn and help students with their computers. Thorough training will be provided.
- Highly motivated individual
- Live on campus
- Ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and with accurate detail via phone, computer (e-mail, IM, forums), and in person
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment both efficiently and courteously
- Knowledge of (or willingness to learn):
- Windows and Macintosh connectivity components
- Web Browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) configuration and troubleshooting
- Configuration and troubleshooting of ethernet cards and wireless routers
- Virus and Spyware removal and prevention
- Configuring peer-to-peer file sharing programs for responsible network usage
- Connectivity and troubleshooting of online games and consoles
- Maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA during employment
- Maintain ten (10) credits per quarter for undergraduate students, eight (8) for graduate students.
